An Ode to Instagram

Posted on January 18, 2013 by Jack Lowe

That’s it — along with many others, I’ve just deactivated my Instagram account.

Instagram Account Deactivation

…me too!

The combination of Peter Krogh’s blog post and discussions with friends were enough to finally convince me to leave.

For eleven months, it was wonderful.  My photographic world became a little more spontaneous and creative, capturing scenes that would normally pass me by and connecting with people I would’t have otherwise have stumbled upon.

Funnily enough, it was only in the last couple of weeks that my following was rapidly starting to blossom, particularly with a series of winter scenes I’ve been posting this week.

An image I posted on Monday rapidly became my most-liked image.

There was no denying the buzz I experienced on seeing so much appreciation roll in for any of my images…

South West View from Grey's Monument, Newcastle upon Tyne, by Jack Lowe

With 75 ‘likes’, this soon became my most popular Instagram…

I’ve always been a fan of the visual quip too.  Instagram offers the perfect platform for that — to see the joke, photograph it, post it and have some mutual enjoyment…

— Act Today!

I feel that the Facebook/Instagram environment has become untenable for professional photographers.

If you’re waiting to decide what to do with your Instagram account, it’s imperative that you act today!

Instagram’s terms are updated tomorrow, 19th January, so if you don’t deactivate your account today your images will be subject to the new terms…even if you deactivate it tomorrow AND even if you set your account to Private.

There’s plenty written elsewhere about all this on the web but Peter Krogh’s post sums it up pretty well.

— When I Think of Instagram…

When I think of Instagram, out of the 652 I posted, for some reason two particular images first spring to mind.

One, another visual quip, I shot specifically to use the hashtag #iseefaces (to me, this pylon looks like some kind of robot reaching out to shake my hand)…

The other, to my mind, is a Lowrie-esque landscape that makes me feel calm and warm.

It’s somewhat of a comfort photograph for me, I guess…

— Farewell…

So, it all ended here.  652 photographs, 300 followers, 101 following and 11,336 likes.

I’ll miss you Instagram, I really will…

— UPDATE: EyeEm an Alternative?

Jack Lowe on EyeEmIt’s Saturday, the dust is settling and I’m gently investigating an alternative, EyeEm.

Apparently, it overtook Instagram last week in the US App Charts.

I’m not saying it’s the alternative to Instagram but it might be a good one — let’s see.

While we work out if it is a good alternative (or if we even want an alternative), feel free to join me there @jacklowe…

Seeing @erlandcooper on Monday night really got me reflecting on the Orkney leg of my journey back in 2016 — all the incredible sights, sounds and wonderful people I met during my stay on Mainland and Hoy. I’ve still got so much of the latest work from Northern Ireland and Scotland to share with you. Thankfully, we’ve got all winter. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp10 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #heritage #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #orkney #longhope #longhopelifeboatmuseum #thomasmccunn #kirkwall #stromness
‪Sometimes, I just can’t help myself! Thought I’d go the extra mile and make a numbered/signed commemorative card to accompany each of the new keyrings. On schedule to start shipping them later this week, and there may be one or two other goodies enclosed! 🌟 #lifeboatstationproject #rnli #bruceholderdesign #bespokekeyring #lspshop #projectkeyring #withcouragenothingisimpossible #withcouragekeyring #couragekeyring ‬
Thank you, @erlandcooper. I’ll treasure my BSG (Bespectacled Solan Goose). #erlandcooper #vinyl #vinylrecord #orkney #solangoose #bespectacledsolangoose
Last night, @erlandcooper made it his mission to transport us to his hometown of Stromness on Orkney from the comfort of the “ferry-like” surroundings of @sage_gateshead’s Sage Two. Bravo, Erland — you completed your mission sublimely. Keep an ear out for Mary Anne Hobbs on @bbc6music from 10:30-1 when Erland and @avamusic will be playing live from @turnercontemporary. I can only guess that they’re on the road already as it’s a bleedin’ long way from Newcastle to Margate! #orkney #stromness #erlandcooper
Feel so lucky to live in such a handsome city and to have kayaking to assist with my mind, body and soul. Cold, crisp days like this are a joy to behold — note the frost forming on the deck hatch. #seakayaking #kayaking #kayak #thisisanadventure #gopro #seakayakinguk #ndkseakayaks #skuk #reedchillcheater #palmequipment #gramkajak ‪#finisterre #finisterreuk #greenlandpaddle #respectthewater ‬#seakayakdeepsearch #newcastle #rivertyne #tynebridge #mindbodysoul #sunset
‪It took 7 weeks but yesterday I finally finished digitising the 57 glass plates I made in Northern Ireland and Scotland during September. The last plate was the one on the left, one of the two boathouse views from @stranraerrnli covering their 17 launch sites. See all the work made over the last 5 years via my profile link. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #heritage #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #scotland #dumfriesandgalloway #stranraer
You may remember that I popped down to North Shields last week to meet up with @benoliel — the post of the container ship heading out to sea. We just needed one more portrait with the appropriately-named Cameraman jacket to complete the @nigel_cabourn Journal article in my profile. Gawd, it’s a beautiful item, all cosy with Harris Tweed. They’re going to have to arm wrestle me to get it back. 😅 Oh, and head to my Story for a link to a post by the man himself. Really chuffed that Nigel enjoyed the article so much. #lifeboatstationproject #maritime #nautical #heritage #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #tynemouth #northshields #nigelcabourn #nigelcabournauthentic #nigelcabournlybro #nigelcabournengland #madeinengland #harristweed
‪Black Friday isn’t a feature of The Lifeboat Station Project but if you’d like a limited edition print in time for “you know what” now’s the time to place your order. Precious cargo: the freshly-made view from Portpatrick lifeboat station, one of the photographs I’ve just published on the site and all part of the story about my journey by @nigelcabournengland. My current profile link takes you right there. Love this picture by @benoliel. It really sums up one of the unseen sides of the project — polishing glass ready for the next day’s photographs often stretches into the small hours. See the full story via my profile link. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #sar #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #scotland #portpatrick #dumfriesandgalloway #nigelcabourn #nigelcabournauthentic #nigelcabournlybro #ambulance #ambulanceconversion #fordtransit #darkroom #mobiledarkroom #neenaspotting #rvinstallationsdevon #dometic #mobilelivingmadeeasy
The nice people from @nigelcabournengland have put together a great piece about the project, which they've published in the Cabourn Journal this evening. Wonderful photographs by @benoliel and words by @jamesdarton — take a look via my profile link or the swipeable links in my Story. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #maritime #nautical #heritage #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #scotland #portpatrick #dumfriesandgalloway #nigelcabourn #nigelcabournauthentic #nigelcabournlybro #nigelcabournengland #madeinengland
There’s a new page on the block — Dumfries and Galloway — which I’ve been building today in readiness to showcase the final two stations of Mission 19, Portpatrick and Stranraer. Pictured: One of the two views I photographed from Portpatrick RNLI lifeboat station on 26th September. Swipe for a closer look at two details I really enjoy within the plate. In the first, you’ll see that every brick is perfectly defined by the 114 year old lens and 168 year old process, even though the lighthouse is 196 metres away. The second detail showing the figure by the anchor and flag is utterly serendipitous — I was so engrossed in exposing the plate that I didn’t realise he was there until afterwards. When I’ve posted this, I’ll add some bigger examples to my Story with swipe-uppable links to the page where these final photographs of September’s mission will be published over the next day or so. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #heritage #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #scotland #portpatrick #dumfriesandgalloway #lighthouse
