Community Guidance

Welcome to Talk Collapse, a community space I built in January 2023 and announced in a blog post called Climate Crisis: Be The Sentinel.

It’s a bespoke social platform free of ads and algorithms, which I hope will mature into a safe place for us to share our thoughts and findings during such difficult social, economic and environmental times.

The platform is public and free to use but you’ll need to register to take part.

Donations are gratefully received to help with its upkeep.

Once registered, you’ll find there are many features common to other social platforms, so it should be pretty self-explanatory.

These are just some of the things you can do:

  • upload a profile photo
  • upload a cover photo
  • follow and connect with other community members
  • post in the news feed
  • edit posts
  • share photos
  • edit privacy of posts
  • send and receive direct messages

Talk Collapse: topics for discussion

Climate and biodiversity breakdown were my main initial motivations for building this space.

But since then, I’ve come to realise that our predicament is much more severe than I realised in that we’re facing the imminent collapse of global industrial civilisation as a result of ecological overshoot.

I’ve learned so much about it lately, the truth about what’s coming and how we should — with love and courage — do our best to adapt and prepare for it.

I feel I can help by sharing and discussing the information I find.

I’ve reached a point in life where I feel so acutely aware of the scale of the predicament we face that it no longer seems appropriate or enough to simply write and talk about my project.

Furthermore, I feel it’s imperative for creators to use their skills to strengthen this message wherever possible.

However, I’m fully aware that there are many other pressing issues too, from the energy crisis to the cost-of-living crisis, to the still-present pandemic, mental and physical health, and even the looming prospect of war.

So, feel free to start sharing your thoughts and findings on the topics that matter to you with posts and comments that you think will help other members.

If you’ve created relevant films, photographs, articles, paintings or other artworks, then all the better!

After all, this community is for us to help each other in the ways we see fit and it’ll become what we make it.

Topics not for discussion

In the spirit of guidance rather than rules, I don’t see this as a place to share any old thing. There are plenty of other places for that!

Nor is it a platform for overt self-promotion and selling of wares.

There will likely be exceptions, of course, but let’s cross those bridges when we come to them.

If you are unsure, please check before you post by sending me a direct message.

So what should I post?

If you’re not sure what to post, simply have a browse through the News Feed and you’ll soon get the gist of how the discussions unfold.

Follow and connect with other members, just as you would do on other platforms.

Share good information you’ve found, ask a question or simply share your thoughts.

Introducing yourself is a good way to start the ball rolling in any community, so perhaps begin with that?

Commenting on posts is a good way to get involved and find your voice too.

But there’s no pressure or hurry, so take your time and let’s see how this new chapter unfolds.

Newsletter

If the community space isn’t for you, the newsletter is a great way to stay connected too.

I recommend you do both as we build this new community together but, of course, the choice is yours.

Any questions?

If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to get in touch by sending me a direct message in the community space or via the form on the Contact Jack page.
